Our welcome charter
(under construction)
At Les Halles de Schaerbeek, everyone is invited to be part of a shared environment based on respect, consideration for others and collective responsibility. We regard diversity as an essential component of any vibrant artistic experience. We champion a space where everyone can exist, move about and express themselves freely, whilst respecting others and their individuality. This charter sets out the conditions necessary for an open, demanding and attentive space.
Here, no discrimination is tolerated.
Racism, sexism, ableism, LGBTQIA+phobia and any form of violence or exclusion have no place here. We remain actively vigilant against such behaviour and support efforts to dismantle it. Any situation of this kind will be addressed by us, potentially leading to exclusionary measures.
Here, consent is a fundamental principle.
It must be freely given, informed, enthusiastic and revocable. Everyone must be able to operate within a safe environment where their boundaries, integrity and privacy are respected. In the event of a problematic situation, the team is available to intervene and provide support.
Here, we acknowledge inequalities and take action to reduce them. Barriers, both visible and invisible, still limit access to culture. We are committed to identifying them and adapting our practices accordingly. Accessibility—physical, social, economic and symbolic—is an ongoing focus of our work.
Here, we support people and practices that broaden the cultural landscape. We support both artists and audiences, including those who do not yet frequent cultural institutions. Our responsibility is to make this place more open, more welcoming and more representative of the diversity of experiences.
We do not ‘declare’ a community, but work to create spaces for connection. Les Halles is not a homogeneous group, but an ecosystem traversed by diverse practices, narratives and ways of being. What we are building are conditions for encounter: spaces where differences coexist, where forms of solidarity can emerge, without presupposing a unity or a shared identity.
This charter is a living document. It is a working tool, open to criticism and adjustment. Your feedback plays a direct part in its development: feedback@halles.be
We invite everyone to actively contribute to an environment where caring for others is a concrete practice, not an abstract principle.
