TELA MISSILIA ARMA

Tsirihaka Harrivel

TELA MISSILIA ARMA is the tangible manifestation of the proximity of danger. People decide to organise themselves and live there, much like a village at the foot of a volcano. It is a vision of a life balanced between resolve and generosity. People engage in tireless and energetic exchanges; the interaction either deepens or turns sour, shifting from attachment to repulsion. The subjects of dispute are literally embodied by objects and props. There is a gap between what we project internally and what comes back to us. Added to this is what falls upon us: literally, without warning. TELA MISSILIA ARMA borrows the principle of a certain martial arts philosophy – surviving in the face of opposing forces – for the duration of a performance: to endure, receive and give within a fleeting moment until exhaustion.

One might imagine that there is no disconnect between our inner aspirations and our actions. Our inner impulses are reflected in our actions. These minute movements of the soul have physical and dizzying counterparts: the circus is equal to the challenges at stake. In martial arts philosophy, the concept of conflict is threefold: internal conflict, conflict with others and conflict with the world. The imprint of our will clashes with necessities. These conflicts create violent movements: thwarted, unexpressed or, conversely, visible. We are often too fragile to resist the everyday violence of life (relational, social and political). In this context, a collection of defensive moves (arma), attacks (tela) and throws (missilia) triggers a series of physical and visual questions and answers through imagery and metaphor in the face of danger.
