Void
Joshua Serafin
Pauline Borgogno - L’Officiel Mag
Occupying a space between the spiritual and the carnal, Void calls to life a mythological presence in the course of change: the birth of a new deity. Joshua Serafin’s body – breaking forth from an island installation bathed in blue light – pairs perfectly with the live sound of Alex Zhang Hungtai’s saxophone. The dance delineates a hybrid ritual where the artist, like a silky summoning, plays with liquid textures.
Originally from the Philippines and trained in visual arts and dance at Brussels’ Performing Arts Research and Training Studios (P.A.R.T.S.), Joshua Serafin challenges the heteronormative images anchored in our cultural imaginations. With this third part of the Cosmological Gangbang trilogy, they captivate us by plunging us into a decolonised universe, one that is freed of the weight of binariness. The movement then allows a mutant creature to emerge, a reflection of the beauty of the world.
