"Le pressentiment d’une possible disparition, un jour, de ces paysages et de ces espèces forme la ligne de base si joliment mélancolique de Gounouj, berceuse tropicale hypnotique."
Ève Beauvallet, Libération

Gounouj – meaning frog in Guadeloupean Creole – is the teeming intersection of dance and nature. Léo Lérus originally created this piece for the Gros-Morne/Grande-Anse site in his native Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. A magnificent protected site, now under threat.

To bring it to life before our eyes, the four dancers draw on the rhythms of gwoka, a musical tradition that fuses percussion, song and movement. Each dancer undulates to their own rhythm, creating a botanical universe composed of a sequence of balances, imbalances, hops, skips and animal movements.
Draped in a pulsating soundscape of birdsong and frog cries, Gounouj resonates like a powerful ode to biodiversity. A breath of hope and resistance for these imperilled, fragile ecosystems.
Gounouj draws inspiration from nature and the rhythms of Guadeloupe. In this workshop, André Moufoundawill guide you through free, rhythmic movement that is close to life itself.Undulations, small jumps, balance games: everyone will be able to move at their own pace and discover an intuitive and open physical approach. The soundscape, featuring birds, frogs and percussion, accompanies this exploration and evokes the landscape that inspired the piece.A simple, warm and dynamic moment to reconnect with your body, your breath and the energy of nature. The workshop is open to all, with no prerequisites, regardless of your level of dance experience.

For SMALLTALK after the GOUNOUJ show, Les Halles de Schaerbeek brings together three voices – Léo Lérus, Estelle Depris* and Mustapha Abatane – to open up a field of analysis where the body becomes a vehicle for memory, ecology, decolonialism and collective transformation.
Through their exchanges, the aim is not only to decipher a choreographic gesture, but to understand what lies behind it: the continuities of Gwo-Ka, the fractures of colonisation, the filters of whiteness, the intimacy between dance and landscape, emotions as drivers of resistance, and strategies to guide audiences towards a more lucid and responsible reception.(Free)
* Estelle Depris is a Belgian anti-racist writer, lecturer and trainer. She creates spaces for engaged transmission to understand whiteness, systemic racism and the resistance that emerges from it.
