Housing policy and segregation, immigration and urban planning, building work and representations. In Bâtir [Building], a work occupying a space somewhere between documentary theatre and performance, Salim Djaferi questions the influence of colonialism on how we conceive of and inhabit our towns and cities.

Following on from Koulounisation, Djaferi pursues a writing style that blends individual stories with collective history. His starting point: the large housing estates where he and his parents grew up in the Parisian suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis, and their striking resemblance to the housing projects built in French Algeria in the 1950s. Djaferi conducts an investigation among his relatives, residents of these neighbourhoods, and researchers who help him delve into the public archives.

From the suburbs to the theatre stage: where is our colonial heritage hidden, and how can we reveal it?

Five solidarity tickets at €5 will be set aside for each performance of performing arts projects (with some exceptions). Please email reservation@halles.be
