Quebecois singer-songwriter Safia Nolin has established a singular voice since her debut – raw, vulnerable, and radical all at once. In Surveillée et punie [Monitored and Punished], the artist steps onto the stage as if entering a ring. Drawing from the insults, threats and humiliations she’s received online, she creates a powerful show that blends concert, performance and collective response. Nothing is sugar-coated: the piece confronts head-on the contemporary violence – misogynistic, fat-phobic, queer-phobic – that permeates the public sphere. But she doesn’t stop at observation.
Driven by music and the power of the choral, Safia Nolin and director Philippe Cyr turn the tide, transforming shame into strength and the theatre into a place of resistance. An artistic statement that’s visceral and necessary, impossible to forget, intended to make “hate change sides”.
