Performing Identity

"What kind of food would nourish documentation? What would be the funeral of a documentation? What would documentation be without a document?"

For two years, the four artists - students at ESA Le 75 in Brussels - followed a group of students from art schools ENSAV La Cambre (Brussels), Burren College of Art (Burren, Ireland) and UAP (Poznan), as part of the training program “Performing Identity. Performance art facing contemporary societal challenges”.

Armed with their senses and equipped with a few tools, each venue, workshop and festival constituted new reflections and documentation perspectives around performance art. The result is a living archive animated by the audiences it encounters, here in the form of a digital platform co-created with graphic design collective Luuse, and an interactive installation.

As many media and formats as sensibilities and environments overlap and intertwine. In trying to move away from conventional documentation, questions about the involvement of the body and its consequences are raised. Is documentation really possible? With what? With whom?

Fanny Schaepelynck (she, her) is a Brussels-based photographer and video artist, student at ESA le 75.
